Maria’s Finished Kit

Maria is made up. Everything here is what the toolkit makes. Her resume is the kit’s real output for her, and her programs are real.

About Maria

  • ADN at Ventura College, expected December 2026
  • NCLEX-RN planned for January 2027, no RN license yet
  • License estimate: Most likely March to May 2027. The state nursing board is moving faster than its usual 10 to 12 weeks right now, so it could be February to March. Her plan is January.
  • Patient Care Technician since June 2024
  • Three student clinical placements, including a 180-hour telemetry preceptorship

1Where She Stands

Her toolkit opens here. She picked 5 programs, close to home and in Los Angeles, and the toolkit checked each one against her degree and license timing. Each folder shows what that program asks for, like the degree.

From NurseGradAlert’s live program data, checked Oct 11, 2026. These programs are real. Only Maria is made up. Each folder shows our last check of that program.

Example: Where Maria Stands

Do You Fit Your Programs?

This is what Maria sees on her own toolkit page, so it speaks to her as “you.”

Your best first shot: The summer cohort at St. John's Regional Medical Center (applications open Mar 1, 2027).

Your 3.7 GPA: Cedars-Sinai Medical Center needs a 3.0 nursing GPA. Your 3.7 meets it, if that's your nursing GPA. The pages of St. John's and PIH Health don't state a GPA minimum.

License estimate: Most likely March to May 2027. The state nursing board is moving faster than its usual 10 to 12 weeks right now, so it could be February to March.

Maria's Timeline

Your plan is January 2027, which is earlier. Ask your school when it sends its graduate list to the state nursing board.

  1. NowAsk 2 people to be your references. Your BLS card expires August 2027, the same month as the start at St. John's Regional Medical Center's summer cohort (August 2027) and PIH Health's June window (start Aug 10, 2027, if last year's dates repeat). Renew it before August 2027.
  2. December 2026You graduate. Send your California exam application to the state nursing board as early as your school allows.
  3. February to May 2027Your RN license, most likely.
  4. Mar 1, 2027St. John's Regional Medical Center: Summer applications open. That cohort fits your license timing. (The spring window closed Oct 8, 2026.)
  5. March (last year's dates)PIH Health opened Mar 9 to 27, 2026, with the license due about May 4. If it repeats, that's possible, but close to your likely license. Not posted yet.
  6. June (last year's dates)PIH Health opened Jun 1 to 19, 2026, with the license due about Jul 27. If it repeats, that timing fits you. Not posted yet.

This is an estimate. The California Board of Registered Nursing, the state nursing board, lists 10 to 12 weeks to process an exam application after graduation, then 2 to 3 weeks for NCLEX results (rn.ca.gov, read Oct 1, 2026). In between, you book and take the NCLEX. Your school's timing can change it. The same page (updated Sep 24, 2026) shows the state nursing board now working on California exam applications received August 16-31, 2026, about 3 to 5 weeks behind. That is faster than its usual 10 to 12 weeks. If it holds, your license could come about a month sooner.

Your license is likely around February to May 2027 (the early end only if the state nursing board keeps moving faster than usual). That is after their deadline, or too close to count on. Programs That Fit You (1 Fit, 28 Might Fit)St. John's Regional Medical Center, where you work and did your preceptorship, was on CommonSpirit's last posting. Your 1 Fit isn't open today. It opens Mar 1, 2027.

We checked every program in the Los Angeles and Ventura area against your degree, your license timing, and any graduation-date or GPA rule their page states. 1 fits by a rule we checked. 5 are out of reach by their own rules. Huntington Health: takes a BSN or MSN. An ADN may be considered for its own employees, and your facts don't show you work there. Long Beach Medical Center, Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital, UCLA Health and VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System's Post-Baccalaureate RN Residency (PBRNR): need a BSN or MSN for every cohort. 28 need a rule or your timing checked before we can call them a fit. Nearest to Oxnard first.

4Her Essay Answer

Made with the lesson “Write a Letter or Essay.”

The question: “Why are you interested in our New Graduate RN Residency? (250 words or fewer)”

What Maria told ChatGPT when it asked for her reasons

“I want to start on a med-surg or telemetry unit. I’ve worked on those floors as a PCT since June 2024, and my preceptorship was on telemetry.”

“I speak Spanish and I want to use it with patients and families.”

The guide never makes up reasons. It asks, then uses her words and her checked facts.

I want to start my RN career on a medical-surgical or telemetry unit, and your residency trains new graduates on both.

I already know these floors. Since June 2024, I have worked as a Patient Care Technician at St. John’s Regional Medical Center on medical-surgical and telemetry floors. I take vital signs, check blood glucose, help patients with walking and hygiene, and provide 1:1 sitter duty. In 2025, I was recognized for reliability with a Daisy Team award.

As a nursing student, I completed a 180-hour telemetry preceptorship at St. John’s. With my preceptor, I cared for up to 4 telemetry patients, including rhythm strip interpretation, and gave discharge teaching to patients with heart failure and patients starting anticoagulants. In my 135-hour medical-surgical rotation at Ventura County Medical Center, I cared for 2 to 3 adult patients per shift under RN supervision and gave SBAR handoff at end of shift.

I speak Spanish fluently, and I want to use it with patients and families.

I will finish my ADN at Ventura College in December 2026 and plan to take the NCLEX-RN in January 2027.

Subject: New Graduate RN Residency, Job ID EX-1234

Hello Nurse Recruitment team,

I applied to the New Graduate RN Residency in Medical-Surgical and Telemetry (Job ID EX-1234) on October 2, 2026. The portal shows my application as complete.

I will finish my ADN at Ventura College in December 2026. I completed a 180-hour telemetry preceptorship at St. John’s Regional Medical Center, and I have worked there as a Patient Care Technician on medical-surgical and telemetry floors since June 2024.

Could you tell me when interviews for this cohort are planned?

Thank you, Maria Elena Castañeda (805) 555-0142 maria.castaneda.rn@example.com

6Her Practice Interview

Made with the lesson “Practice Your Interview.”

A short practice with the guide, one question at a time. Her answers use only her checked facts.

  1. ChatGPT: Tell me about yourself.

Maria: I’m Maria Castañeda. I’m finishing my ADN at Ventura College in December 2026, and I plan to take the NCLEX-RN in January 2027. Since June 2024, I’ve worked as a Patient Care Technician at St. John’s Regional Medical Center on medical-surgical and telemetry floors. In July and August, I completed a 180-hour telemetry preceptorship there.

Feedback: Clear and true. You kept “plan to take” for the NCLEX. Next time, end with one line on why you want this residency.

  2. ChatGPT: Why do you want to start on med-surg and telemetry?

Maria: I already know those floors. As a PCT, I take vital signs, check blood glucose and do 1:1 sitter duty there. On my preceptorship, I cared for up to 4 telemetry patients with my preceptor, including rhythm strip interpretation. That’s where I want to start as a new RN. I also speak Spanish, and I want to use it with patients and families.

Feedback: Strong. “With my preceptor” keeps it honest, and your Spanish fits this posting.

  3. ChatGPT: Tell me about a time you taught a patient or a family something.

Maria: On my telemetry preceptorship, I gave discharge teaching to patients with heart failure and patients starting anticoagulants. On pediatrics, I helped with family teaching for children age 2 to 14.

Feedback: That lists what you did, but it isn’t a story yet. Pick one real moment, with no names: what you taught, what you did, and how it ended. I won’t make one up for you. If you don’t have one ready, say so, and add it to your story worksheet before the interview.

  4. ChatGPT: How do you hand off your patients at the end of a shift?

Maria: On my medical-surgical rotation at Ventura County Medical Center, I documented in Cerner and gave SBAR handoff at end of shift, under RN supervision.

Feedback: Short and true. Be ready to say what SBAR stands for: Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation.
